|
|
I just modified my SMS2 to have more video outputs.
Check out the tutorial here:
http://www.stickfreaks.com/smsmod.php
I followed this and am now using the s-video connector and RCA LR audio outputs - much more convenient than tuning in the RF (particularly if you don't have an analogue tuner)
The mod allows a composite (usually yellow RCA), svideo and even 3 seperate R G B outputs if you have something that'll support them. I put in the svideo mini-DIN, composite video RCA and two audio RCAs. It all worked really well with the exception that the composite video output stopped working after I screwed everything back together (but svideo looks fantastic). Not sure what I did there...
(I also added the 50/60 Hz switch at the same time)
Definitely worth looking into!

With svideo it's a huge improvement actually. It makes the system look as crisp and clean as the PC emulators. |

Yep, did all at once. Here are some photos:
Modified SMS2:
Close up. Connectors left to right are:
- 50/60 Hz switch
- s-video connector
- composite video connector (they ran out of yellow at Jaycar...)
- LR audio (the sms is mono but it's easier to provide 2 connectors so that a splitter isn't needed outside the unit.)
Inside the unit. The 50/60 Hz switch is connected to one chip and all other connections are to the Sony chip described in the link on my first post. The small circuit board is holding the capacitor/resistor pairs. It's not a very neat job, I'll plan it a little better if I do it again. I had to cut away some of the big metal cover (heatsink?) to fit the connections to the switches.

I'll take some photos of it - but nothing too close up that would reveal my horrible soldering efforts! |

Photos now in post above. After describing the process I'm now keen to repeat and do a neat job of it... the SMS2 is usually quite expensive on ebay at the moment |

nice work! im impressed
oh by the way, i wouldnt worry too much about the metal shielding, it's not used as a heatsink but rather, to protect it from any rf interference (which isnt going to happen anyway!)
the only thing generating any heat is the voltage regulators over near where the power supply plugs in. |
